My computer's S L O W

Postby Roxy127 » 29 May 2010, 04:12

Sorry if this has been asked before but im wondering of anyone could please help
me with this problem?
It's drivin' me nuts!!

Im using Windows XP and Internet Explorer.

Im NOT computer savvy but i know there's a lot of very pc savvy people on here!

It's just taking me ages waiting for anything to download,ie: the little blue
circle goes round and round and round waiting for a page to open.

I have Spybot S&D and AVG which i use about once a week.
Has anyone any other ideas to help things speed up ??????
Thanks to everyone,
;)

Maybe you just need to de-frag the thing. You can find the link for it on your START menu, then click on accessories, then on system tools, you should see Defragment listed there, just click on it and let the puter alone for a few hours it'll do it's 'thing' then you should be fine for a month or so, then you do it again.

OOPS! That shouldn't have happened with a defragmentation! It never happened to mine that way, and I wouldn't know how to delete your history or even know how someone could see that had happened. I hope your friend can get things cleared up for you, and fast. That blue screen is not a good sign I think. My puter runs slow because i have more than one anti virus program running, and everything goes thru both of them, thereby slowing the operation by doubling the time it takes. What I have done in the past is to contact microsoft and let one of their tech types talk me through an on line repair. Good luck

Im using Windows XP and Internet Explorer.

There's your first problem. Start using a web browser such as Firefox or Chrome.

Windows can slow down considerably without some TLC. There's a bunch of stuff you can do to speed up the computer.

1. Delete programs you don't use.
2. Go into Windows Startup and disable most of the programs that automatically load when you turn your PC on.
3. If you leave your computer on all the time, start "hard" booting it weekly.
4. Google a windows utilities program and run it to clear up junk files and clean up the Windows registry
5. Run spyware software.
6. Defrag as a previous poster said.

Thank you,Teen and im embarassed to admit that i had a tech out two days ago and "all" it was
was that id used up my Gb's for the month and so my provider s l o w s down the computer
instead of charging for extra useage!!

I felt such an idiot

But,seems i obviously need more gigabytes so for an extra $10 a month,
ive upgraded and wont have this happen again.
Id been persevering with this prob for MONTHS and didnt realize thats all it was?

Ouch....that's sucks! I would be extremely pissed off at my IP if they pulled that stunt on me!

It still doesn't hurt to practice the points I've outlined above :)

So glad I'm in Canada with unlimited Internet access. I was downloading the other day and the counter hit 2.5 MB/s. Felt like I was driving the Cadillac of computers! Whoot!

You realize Canada's ISPs are behind the times compared to other developed countries?

Relatively speaking, that I'm not capped at a certain gig download in a month, I'm perfectly ok with our substandard internet. I know a lot of people in the US that are still on dial up as well.
