So glad I'm in Canada with unlimited Internet access. I was downloading the other day and the counter hit 2.5 MB/s. Felt like I was driving the Cadillac of computers! Whoot!

Show-off!!

We're (Australia)in the middle of an election at the moment and Broadband is one of the issues to be considered.

The other option or to do as well.

Install a second FREE operating system alongside windows.

it is easy to do and it gives you some extra flexibility

I would personally recommend Ubuntu

http://www.ubuntu.com/

You can then choose to boot / use windows or Ubuntu when you start up.

Spybot will slow things down considerably, especially if you're using the "teatimer" or whatever it's called. Startup programs also create a drain on your RAM (Random Access Memory). Getting rid of cookies and stuff that loads as you surf the internet slows it down even more. You'll be surprised as to how many "cookies" get loaded on. Many are harmless but some will report back keystrokes.

Glad to hear that it was a IP issue. But more often than not, the culprit is (1) start-up programs (2) cookies (3) virus protection programs that are hogs on random access memory. You can try to add more RAM -- it's very inexpensive nowadays, and fairly easy to install.

I use a modem card for business and personal travel. It's surprising how much speed fluctuates according to what area of the country that you're in. Surprisingly, being in highly populated areas does not necessarily mean a faster transfer speed.

You realize Canada's ISPs are behind the times compared to other developed countries?

http://www.canada.com/technology/Canada ... story.html

That's not really true in urban areas. If you want to spend the money, you can get a 10 Megabit connection from Rogers.

And if you really want top notch service, you can get an Internet T1 or higher connection... it only costs money.

Plus you can get mobile internet at speeds of 2-3 megabits.

I myself am fine with a 900k upload and 5megabit download dsl package with unlimited data. Not the fastest, but at least I don't have to worry about extra data charges.

Of course it's a different story in some places in the middle of nowhere. But that's the reality of a country with lots of land and comparatively little population.
