as the stern lifts
we rock on this huge ship
filled with people swaying gently
many serving with humanity
others there just to be free
on the vast and open sea

feeling the waves within my body
lulling me to sleep
or wide awake watching silently
filling me with energy
feeling the beauty
of this vast and open sea

the ship glides smoothly
until the next wave hits
rocking on this immense ship
a feat of technology
elemental psychology
on the vast and open sea
However long the night, the dawn will break.

a feat of technology
every one the subject of high praise
conversely ignored is that
"While enormously useful when deciding how to do something
unfortunately technology is rendered mute
when it comes to determining what we should do" (LM)
"When robbed of the shining armor of political, moral and philosophical theories by which it defends itself, power will fight on without armor; but it will be more vulnerable and the strength of its enemies is increased." (Reinhold Niebuhr)

when it comes to determining what we should do
some people will ponder their choices
analyzing possible outcomes
listening to inner voices
some feel they've a moral compass
and look up the right pick in a book
some fling themselves head first off the end of the dock
without even stopping to look
"Ring the bells that still can ring, forget your perfect offering, there is a crack, a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." Leonard Cohen

Some people will ponder their choices
And so they should
The essential substance of freedom
Steeped in forethought
Carefully crafted decisions
Are the hallmarks of an agent
Rather than a victim of circumstance
Right wrong or indifferent
Their merit exceeds
The thieving powerlessness
Of a life surrendered to fate
"When robbed of the shining armor of political, moral and philosophical theories by which it defends itself, power will fight on without armor; but it will be more vulnerable and the strength of its enemies is increased." (Reinhold Niebuhr)

steeped in circumstance designed by fate
I drink my brew created by yesterday
swallowing todays data
asborbed like rain in the left over cotton
littering the fields of tomorrow
plowed in pretty rows
springing forth new hope
and crafting promise

swallowing today's data
buzzing with today
drinking in
the big wide world
in thirsty gulps
minds collide
through keyboards
lines wide open
a golden age

in thirsty gulps
i suck it all in
the blood colored roars
of looking good
in muscle shirts
showing off
tattoo philosophies
lamenting the despair
of the monkey wrench gang
surviving the pitfalls
to grow old and know
that my sense of sight
obscures the wisdom
of my blindness
and that my ears
defy the truth of my deafness

( i may also chime in a hardy 'welcome' sir knight)
All creeds and kinds and colors of us are blending, Till i suppose 10 million years from now we'll all be just alike. Same color, same size. Working together. And maybe we'll have all of the fascists out of the way by then. Maybe so. woody guthrie.

tattooed philosophies onced shared
made statements to a generation
a universal understanding
that seems all too twisted
by old scholars screaming
it isnt an art form
but we know self expression
of any kind surely can be
for ink crosses all boundries
in all cultures through time
creating their own master pieces
upon human fresh boldly
in more than black and white
coloring skin like a mural
by its own very design
set my mind free on me
and let me wear pictures
like clothing from a dream
caught in the wind of a sting
through a needle in the hands
of a modern day artist

set my mind free on me
too long chained by pride
fear and indoctrination
only with shame can I
look back at what I thought
was true and real

looking back at what I thought
through letters newly uncovered
written by a young woman
who had a whole world to discover
I find that a lifetime of learning
has only taught what I already knew
joy and sorrow are there to pick as we will
just the thrill of the living will do

what a lovely crowd above me :D
