sully grabbed the last of the wine
and something like a cross between
an angel of mercy and a rations officer
he waded into the circle of outstretched arms
tilting the half empty bottle
a little into each thirsty glass

then raising his own he bellowed

we just survived another week in paradise
let's go raise some hell

so the gang decided to go celebrate
the fact that it was saturday night
they piled into capra's truck
and bounced down the gravel switchback
to the desert floor
moth drawn to the glitz and glitter of the strip

i stood and watched a bit
the red tail lights snaking their descent
until the dust and the night claimed them
and their laughter dwindled into
echoes in the wind

i pulled a chair out onto the patio
turned off the lights
sat back
and listened to the stars and the desert
share reminiscences
about how it used to be

before the circus came to town
Are we really happy here with this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say?...lost in a masquerade......George Benson

interesting.....

They piled in Capra's truck
fleeing the encroaching desert
under a noontime sunset
till the dust of night claimed them
enveloping their awareness
consumed by the encroaching desert
clinging to the hope and memory
of Capra's 'Wonderful Life'
giving way instead to 'the trampling
of the vintage where
the grapes of wrath are stored'

(borrowed from steinbeck who borrowed from his wife who borrowed from the 'battle hymn of the republic' which in all likelihood borrowed from the bible, though the last 'liberation' is just conjecture)

under a noontime sunset
they planned their getaway
foregoing small town fireworks
dreaming of the shore
of strolling arcades
pre-baby days

hair forced into style
little dress over long legs
she kisses her boy goodbye
promising to win him
a small stuffed toy
leaves her phone home

they walk the dark night
a bit of the old carefree
love and lust jersey heat
girls eye him guys eye her
young and gorgeous
out late, but not
as late as expected

morning CJ. Had this one on the drawing board for a while, so, well, here it goes:

love and lust jersey heat
watching surf roll out and roll in
the hypocrisy of respectability
the irony of the thought of past sin

Sirens on the night wind
Full moon in the sky
Rememberin' how I used to feel
When I wished that I would die

Walking on the boardwalk
Salt spray in the air
Heading towards the drawbridge
I jumped off on a dare

Thinking back when I was King
and working in a bar
I tread those same boards every day
that felt so very far

Selling the old kids qualudes
Stealing the young kids' beers
Living the life of the tough guy
running on childish fears

Always considered the strange one
Always the one to get crisp
Never the one to get what he wanted
Always the one to get pissed

Hung up at the drawbridge
Lettin' boats out and boats in
Thinking up a stupid song
Wearin' a sh-t-eatin' grin

The wind blew through the beachgrass
and I could here them say
"you crazy humans come and go"
"but we are here to stay"

"How come you humans make so much noise?"
"Why cant you just be still"
"Why do you need to change things"
"Why is it you kill?"

I said to the beachgrass
Cuz we think we're always right
But you have an advantage
Roots that hold you tight

"Yeah, but we too must absorb"
"To grow or else we'll die"
"And we too cant imagine"
"How to live a life that dry"

This may be true, but you hang out
where you need just what you'll find
Cuz its never dry down by the river
I know all about your kind.

The bridge went down, a cop walked by
Said "Kid, the bridge is down"
"Who is it your waiting for"
"What is it you want?"

He asked "so what ya doing kid?"
"Why dont you move along?
I said Im talkin' to the grass 'bout death
and thinking up a song

He said "All you long haired hippy freaks"
"I swear your all the same"
"You walk around here all spaced out"
"and then you pass the blame"

"So lets just move along, kid"
"But first lets check those eyes"
"Tell me what your up to kid"
"And dont tell me no lies"

I was now a tad pissed off
for I had told the truth
I said Im talking to the grass
of death and of my youth

He asked "whats that about grass and death?"
"I better run you in"
"We dont like that talk 'round here"
"We dont want your kind of sin"

I said hey wait now occifer
that aint no way to be
I aint done nuthin wrong
so please, just let me be

He said "This aint harrassment"
"So dont you get me wrong"
"your eyes and hair say one thing"
"your too dumb to write a song"

They took a set of pictures
and rolled my hands in ink
Threw me in the jail cell
and left me there to stink

Again I asked him 'bout the charges
He said "There aint no rush"
"I am slow at typing"
"so why dont you please hush"

I spent the night a-wondering
why some things never change
how small the world's becoming
why cant we re-arrange

Well the sun came up and the cop came in
said "Kid, its time you walk"
"I hope that you learned something"
"Cuz beachgrass just dont talk"

I finally kept my mouth shut
as par, a bit too late
i said, yes sir Mr. Occifer
I shouldnt f-ck with fate

The moral of the story
in case you wonder why
its when you talk to occifers
it can pay to tell a lie

Wow.....this whole page is brilliant! and J.....from one who lives by the ocean....yes, sirree, the beachgrass does talk...as does the sand and sky and sea....they speak of the present and humanity and eternity.....what a blessing, even though it's lost to so many. xo

though with a subtly
different accent

Everything talks if you listen to it long enough I suppose
there is a fine line between hallucination and purpose
while the news gets hung up on the dichotomy between truth and fact
i dont
for at the end of the day
the only question
we must face and answer is
so f-cking what?

so many lines...

so f-cking what?
do all my small moves
make any difference
when I dare peek
at a greater picture?

when I look up
at the great wall
of disaster or achievement
can my little ant
pushing a crumb
even be seen?

is consideration
of this human endeavor
or self examination
even worthy
of my mulling or moaning?

can I accept my ignorance
not wasting my time questioning
when no answers
are truly available
and hope ripples of
laughter shared are enough?
