Please allow me opportunity to make couple clarifications and explanations for certain problems in gyms here in the states, canada, Ethiopia, UK, etc. First, I am a certified fitness trainer in Calif. have have established many years of service and 20 CEU's every year for past 10 years as well. First, I want to state that this guy owns this problem all by himself. From what he ahs described, I can sense that he never once paid for a trainer's advice or consultation. Second, I will make this comment forever to every gym member..."do the proper research yourself." Consult the anatomy book, physiology books, many fantastic workout refernces available online (free) and in stores. Do your own research people. just because you join a health clun does NOT entitle you to tap into the brain's of (knowledgeable) trainer's for free. Why do people automatically assume that they can have free reign of trainer's and/or nutritionists once they become members of a gym. You must remember that each and every person's phsyiology, metabolic rate, conditioning, muscle symmetry, age, disease such as cardiac or diabetic, VO2 MAX, etc so how is it that a trainer is to just walk up to you and offer a workout plan without relating the pertinent health and medical information of that specific member. For example, a diabetic has certain exercise contraindications that they must adhere to or face certain health hazard or even death. Let's review the heart patient for example, the primary contraindacation is they do not perform any form isometric exercise or they too could die. MS patients have certain deficit with balance and this must be managed with exercise that focus on propreceptive and nueromuscular fitness to maintain fitness. You must understand that today's CERTIFIED fitness traners that are legitimate must process litinay of medical history and data and generate an exercise prescription that fits the requirements of the clients needs. In addition, I have personally given many many hundreds and hundrreds of my own personal time to assist people on the floor doing exercise completely wrong just to see them doing the same exercise completely wrong another day. Also, once we give advice, we can become liable for lawsuits from the very individuals that we assist. I could write volumes of information on this subject but what is the point.

I don't know. I used to live in gyms. I'm not a trainer, but for the better part of my life, used to be a gym rat. Giving, and getting advice from each other used to be a good thing. I quit going to the gym a couple of years ago, but plan on going back soon. BC makes it sound like a "risk management" thang. Maybe because he's a trainer.

The bottom line is that the best "trainers" are those who hang around the gym, learn from the school of "it worked for me," and have the body to show it. I'm not aware of anyone who, out of the joy of exercising, got sued for sharing their feelings.

Maybe that's the trainer's world, it's certainly not the experience of those of us who just get a kick out of exercising.

I agree with you Krebby. The great thing about my gym is how friendly and welcoming everyone is and how we all help each other and have no fear of asking each other or the staff for advice, and I think that's how all gyms should be. Free training consultations are part of the deal there, so nobody ever feels they can't ask for help, all we have to do is have a word with a trainer when we walk in and they'll fit us in if they can or make an appt for another day, it works really well.
