DIY Manifesto policies

Postby Addy01 » 18 Apr 2010, 15:54

I see lots of different ideas on these forums, some good, some not-but most make me stop and think and in some cases change my view.

So, here in the UK we are the run up to an election and are being bombarded with what each party will do.

Just for fun, let's make up our own policies that we think would work. Quirky, fun or serious, post what you would like to see happen in the UK that you think would benefit the country as a whole or just one section of it. No affiliation to any party, just your own ideas. Outline the WHAT and the WHY.

Don't get fixated on where the money will come from etc, this is all just blue sky thinking to kick start peoples thought processes and debate. Although aimed at the UK because it's so relevant just now, obviously ideas from any of our non UK members whether about our country or theirs would be interesting.

I will start with this one:
WHATA form of National Service:

Every 16 year old will be given a job. It can be anything from working in a shop or an office to a building site. But for two years they will be given employment.

They will all be paid the same wage whatever the job is, say £150 a week made up of £75 from the government and £75 from the employer. However, they will only receive £100 a week and the other £50 will be put into a savings account for them.

At the end of their two years they can then decide whether they want to continue working where they are, undertake an apprenticeship, seek a different job or go to college/university,.

The £200 a month that has been saved in their name plus interest will be give to them to fund said college/university, help them buy a car or put a rental deposit down on a flat/house. In effect the money is their to do as they please.

Those who over the two years have a high non attendence forfeit a % of the monies saved from their wage.

WHY
In those two years youngsters are being taught how to be responsible for themselves as they transition from being a child into an adult.

Employers would have a ready source of people to fill vacancies

Youngsters would also be learning how to manage money and the importance of saving.

Those two years would give them a breather to mature and to decide what they really want to do with their lives. At 16 very few people can categorically state which career path they want to follow and yet schools expect them to do just that.

Once the two years were up then they have not only gained in maturity, responsibility etc, but they have a lump sum to help them achieve the next step up to where they want to be.

What would be your idea and why?
We might think a little differently, but we got a lot in common you and me, we're just like you..............................................only prettier!
