You can't go wrong with a big wedge of cheddar!..crusty bread, salad and pickle! or even better a pickled onion that makes your eyes water... Bugger! I am hungry now :(

Me too! I had to go get hummus & pitta thinking about it!

Best to have more than one cheese? Pork pie?

You can go large! like add a few crackers and three types of cheese..Red leicester is good one and maybe a bit of Stilton/Danish blue.. pork pie and others bits can be added..But you may end up with Christmas on a plate rather than a ploughman's
The simple ploughman's was originally for the workmen on a hot Summers day with a jug of scrumpy cider..

Now I am also thirsty..I think I need to go to bed, before I raid the cupboards.. ;)

(Thanks for this thread, brought some lovely memories back of me, my mom and dad, cycling through the Cotswold's..and stopping off at a pub for a ploughman's.. ah them were the days)

Brown crusty bread...As mentioned just plain Cheddar from any country, not a mild, but mature, or strong, not "seriously strong"...

Try applewood smoked...I had some really nice goats cheese, straight from the farm, no additives or preservatives...You could also try the cheeses with the likes of cranberries mixed in, depends on yer pallette...

Instead of pickles, try a chutney, tomato chutney is real good...

Biscuits?...I have a fetish for digestives, a spread of real butter, and cheddar...

Right, breakfast...
